Tenure Track Position in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) in Education
University of Alberta
The Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of education and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) in education. We are primarily seeking an emerging scholar to hire at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
The successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Education (or related area, including Computer Science), whose primary focus is in the application of AI/ML in learning environments. They will be expected to build a strong, independent, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses. Strong potential for productive interactions with other researchers in the Faculty and in other disciplines/units at the University of Alberta will be considered an asset. In addition, the successful candidate must have demonstrated research potential strong enough to qualify for a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence (CCAI) Chair as evidenced by an impactful program of research and publications in top venues that make fundamental advances in AI/ML or fundamental advances in how AI/ML is applied within educational settings such as K-12 and higher education.
The successful candidate will be nominated for a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence (CCAI) Chair by the http://www.amii.ca/, which includes research funding for at least five years. This position is part of a University of Alberta cluster hire in the intersection of Machine Learning and other areas, including areas of research strength in Health, Energy, and Indigenous Initiatives in health and humanities, among others. The successful candidate will also become an Amii Fellow, joining a collegial institute of world-class Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning researchers, have access to Amii internal funding resources, administrative support, and a highly collaborative environment.
Ranked third in the country and in the top 100 globally, the Faculty of Education is home to over 100 world class scholars, including three Canada Research Chairs, whose research spans a diverse range of disciplines including but not limited to measurement, evaluation and data science (MEDS), deaf education, Indigenous education, library and information studies, multilingualism and structured literacy. Offering the largest undergraduate teacher education in Canada, along with the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP), two nationally accredited graduate professional psychology programs, an internationally accredited masters in library and information studies, an accredited graduate TESL program, MEDS, and many other specializations, the Faculty of Education is making an impact locally, nationally and internationally. The addition of the English Language School in 2022 has further enhanced the opportunity for students to study and learn in this world class Faculty.
The Centre for Research on Applied Measurement and Evaluation (CRAME) is one of five research centres in the Faculty with a vision to contribute to education systems in which applied assessment and evaluation is firmly rooted in research in order to maximise the experience and learning of all students. Faculty members working in CRAME undertake research in AI and machine learning that is far reaching and widely cited within and beyond education and its related disciplines. The CIFAR chair will be situated in MEDS with opportunities to contribute to CRAME and other AI and Machine Learning initiatives across the Faculty and the University.
The anticipated start date for this position is 1st July 2025.
Salary will be based on the incumbent's qualifications, experience, and achievements and by the Faculty Agreement.
