About the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP): ATEP is a flagship program within the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. The program is dedicated to increasing the number of Indigenous teachers in Alberta's K-12 education system. It works to integrate Indigenous knowledge, histories, perspectives, and cultural practices into teacher education, aiming to provide future educators with the skills and understanding to better support Indigenous students and communities. Over the past five years, ATEP has expanded significantly, offering diverse delivery models that include on-campus, online, and community-based cohorts across Alberta.

Position

The Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta invites applications from qualified Indigenous scholars for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Indigenous Education, with expertise in at least one of the following areas:

• Curriculum perspectives in STEM education with a deep understanding of Indigenous worldviews, connection to land and traditional ecological knowledge, and responsive teaching practices.
• Educational psychology (e.g., child development, assessment, inclusive education).

This position will be situated within the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP), a flagship program in the Faculty of Education. The successful candidate will begin their appointment on July 1st, 2025. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and rapidly growing program that currently serves approximately 240 students across on-campus, online, and community-based cohorts throughout Alberta and other parts of Canada.

Duties

The University of Alberta is committed to fostering access, community and belonging within our academic community. • Teaching and Mentorship: Instruct undergraduate courses within the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP). Teach and provide supervision and guidance to graduate students specializing in Indigenous Peoples Education and related fields. Design and contribute to courses that align with ATEP's Vision and Guiding Values, while integrating Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing.
• Research and Scholarship: Engage in research that advances knowledge in Indigenous Education and aligns with the program's commitment to improving the educational experiences and outcomes for Indigenous children. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and contribute to the creation of knowledge that supports Indigenous communities and educational systems.
• Community Engagement and Service: Contribute to the broader educational and Indigenous communities through service and outreach. Foster meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, schools, and organizations. Participate in professional development and community service activities that advance Indigenous education locally and nationally.
• Service and Institutional Contribution: Serve on committees within the Department, Faculty, and University. Contribute to the ongoing development of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program and support the University's commitment to decolonization, reconciliation, and social justice.

Minimum Qualifications

• An earned doctorate or a completion date set for a doctorate in Education, Indigenous Studies, or a closely related field.
• Lived experience as an Indigenous person and scholar.
• Relevant teaching experience at both the K-12 and post-secondary levels. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching at the elementary or secondary school levels.
• Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: curriculum perspectives in STEM, and/or educational psychology.
• Strong commitment to the mission of ATEP, which aims to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous children and promote the understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and knowledge systems.
• Demonstrated ability and potential for scholarly excellence in Indigenous Education, with a focus on innovative knowledge creation, research dissemination, and community engagement.
• Proven experience in graduate student supervision and mentoring.
• Commitment to service and extracurricular involvement in community or professional activities related to Indigenous education and development.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active involvement in Indigenous communities and initiatives.
• A record of research and/or community-based projects focused on decolonizing educational practices and advancing Indigenous pedagogies.
• Experience working in collaborative, cross-institutional environments or partnerships with Indigenous communities and educational organizations.
